Stress is relieved primarily through sleep in our busy modern lives. We usually collapse into bed after a hard days work, hoping nature will take its course turning the internal light switch it out, bringing another day of tension. World renown Physicist John Hagelin PhD says that this doesn’t have to be the case, that Meditation is the key.
Meditation places you in a state of relaxation deeper than sleep. This leads to a release of stressors that sleep cannot release.
This was stated by Dr. John Hagelin at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan NYC during a Press Conference on Consciousness Based Research and Transcendental Meditation on December 13th, 2010.
To put it bluntly, Meditation is a Big Sigh of Relief – Animals have very simple lives and fall into sleep to handle their simple stressors to balance the tension and hormones released during their simple day to day activities.
Our Modern Lifestyles are bombarded with so much stimulus of rational thought, mechanistic, mathematical computation, use of high tech machinery, radio and email for very long drawn out times – our day is engaged at high levels from 7am-7pm daily.
Meditation provides us with that deeper level relaxation essential for our personal health… this, unfortunately, primal simple sleep cannot provide.
To put this into perspective, I’ve been using a simple example to explain the powerful implications of this to my clients within a high stress lifestyle.
When in a state of shock, all animals (including humans) release huge doses of hormones – cortisol being the most deadly of them all. These if left unattended – not actively released through relaxation techniques, physical exercise or sleep cause much toxicity and harm to the body.
Now let’s look at humans – as much as we view ourselves as being much more evolved than animals, our biological processes are still very much the same. Natural Evolution takes 1000′s of years to change something within a creature, and because of this we still emit cortisol (the bad stress hormone that causes heart disease, obesity and depression) when in high stress situations. Our “Body” only registers stress as a Fight or Flight situation (as in it doesn’t discern if it is a harmless argument, looming deadline, or a cougar ready to jump you), it just reacts to the situation by emitting the hormones that will protect you, the same hormones I mentioned above….
Our Modern Lifestyles are filled with such a bombardment of new-age stressors that we heavily need to find away to balance all of this out. Any type of Medication and worst of all intoxicants are very topical or regressive, and their effectiveness decreases the more you use it.
So this is where we go beyond Natural evolution and enter the space of Human Innovation and understanding. Know that we know that this is the case in our lives we need to set up a Mind|Body Training schedule using Meditation as our Fitness tool, very much the way we workout on our muscles.
