Being Mindful with Jon Kabat-Zinn Pioneer of Mindfulness

Mindful living and Mindfulness created by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is an interesting new catch phrase that is currently sweeping across North America. The phrase was coined by Jon Kabat-Zinn—a Professor of Medicine Emeritus from Harvard University and founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic and Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School—and is based on developing self-awareness and a “fine-tuned” mind to tackle decision-making, depression, stress, and anything that requires the use of your mind.

In today’s society we are bombarded by so much stimulus and stress that our minds have difficulty dealing with it all. The key to bringing your mind into balance is to bring a deep awareness of the present moment into everything that you do, says Kabat-Zinn. For example, our attention is always outside of our body: on road conditions, the next project, our children, friends, clients, etc. We are always in a state where we throw our attention away from ourselves, even when it comes to communicating. This is unconsciously very tiring for your body and your mind.

We very rarely truly listen in silence, with full awareness internalizing what is being said and feeling the underlying emotions and sensations of the dialogue. Yet, listening with our attention focused inward, leads to an altruistic, compassionate approach to any situation—one with no judgment, no evaluation, and no ego, yet with, most importantly, a sense of calm. Listening in silence brings calm because the practice is based on truth, good merit, and the present moment.

When we’re outside of the moment, always striving for the next step, to be somewhere, needing to do something, never fulfilled, we become drained.  When we bring our attention to the inner self, not only does our communication go much deeper, but we enter the present moment with much more intensity. Being in the moment. your mind and body are at ease and relaxed.

“Being in the moment is not discrediting what needs to be done, but instead we’re doing the actions with full presence and in relaxed awareness. This leads to increased creativity, intuition and ultimately fulfillment through self-awareness.”

Kabat-Zinn goes on to say a
“Mindful State and Mindfulness Meditation, is like fine-tuning your mind. A World-Class Orchestra can have the best musicians with the best instruments, yet if they don’t take the small amount of time to tune their instruments, their sound will be off and not in harmony. Meditation is the fine-tuning of your mind to bring us into a balanced state, in harmony with ourselves and our surroundings.”
